Superyacht Photography with Konner Webb
     @konner.webb

His Instagram photos have been catching our eye for a while now. So this week we caught up with Konner Webb, the 20-year old photographer from Annapolis, a small sailing town in Maryland on the east coast of America, who is making his mark in superyacht photography.

For the past two years Konner’s been living the dream working as a freelance photographer in the Yachting industry, and is driven by his passion for everything photography and boat related. We asked him to share some insight into his photography, future plans and his industry top tips!

How did you initially get involved with the Yachting industry?

Growing up on the water and around boating is how it all started. I have been going to boat shows with my family ever since I can remember. I started to photograph the boats around me and became obsessed!

I then started meeting some amazing people within the industry – brokers, owners etc. which then led me to the present.

What was your career path? How did you go from being an aspiring photographer to doing it full-time for a living?

After high school I decided to take my passion for photography and love for the industry globally!

How long have you been working as a freelance photographer? Did you start in the Yachting industry?

I’ve been working freelance for about two years now and yes, I started within the yachting industry.

Have you thought about joining the industry as a crew member?

I have thought about this topic a lot. I’ve had the chance to meet some amazing crew members onboard various boats and always enjoy hearing their story’s from a charter or just getting to know the industry more from a different perspective!

However I have been told that it would be difficult to juggle being a photographer and creating content as well as being a crew member in the industry.

How would you describe your style of photography?

I’d say my style is always changing and growing as I learn. At the moment I love color and really showing the yachting experience through a good shot.

What gear do you use?

Camera body: Nikon D5200

Lens: 24-85mm, 70-300mm long lens, 35mm portrait lens, and 10-20mm wide angle lens.

Drone: Mavic Pro 2 (zoom)

Anything else? My water/surf housing for those split level shots.

What’s your favourite lens & why?

I’ve been loving my 24-85mm lens as it can be used for almost everything.

How do you continue to improve? Are there any particular magazines or websites you refer to in order to stay up to date with the latest technology?

One of my favourite media company’s is the SuperYacht Times! I am definitely one of there biggest fans you could say. I really love what Merijn and the whole team is doing within the industry it’s truly amazing and maybe one day I will get to be apart of it? Further I continue to improve by reading and staying current using various social media platforms as I do believe that social media is the huge part in the future of our industry!

What is one thing you wish you’d known when you started taking photos?

That lighting is key.

What’s your favourite location for a shoot?

Definitely has to be off the coast of Spetses, Greece.

Do you prefer photographing boats or people?

100% boats – Although I do love lifestyle shots, however I just think that my heart lays in the design and craftsmanship of the vessel itself as they truly are works of art.

What advice would you give to an amateur photographer wanting to change their passion into a full-time profession? Do they need fancy equipment?

I love this question as I have shot with the same camera ever since I started and I have made it work. Although having a crazy setup can help land jobs and it does make you look better showing up to a shoot. It’s all about what’s in the shot at the end of the day regardless of how good the quality can get.

What advice would you give someone who wanted some tips on improving their yacht photos?

I would have to say think outside the box I know that sounds a bit cliché, so really take time to look at the design and lines of the yacht and get creative with it!
