Following a successful pilot last year, we are delighted to confirm our continued support for yachting’s first industry-wide mentorship programme in association with Burgess.
Set to launch on December 1st, LEGASEA Mentorship is designed for career-focused yachting professionals, regardless of which boat they work on, or the shore-based company they are employed in.
The programme is open to anyone who is driven and motivated to succeed for a fee, however, we and industry-leading professional services company, Burgess, will provide a select number of 'Scholarship Seats' to candidates for no charge.
These will be awarded to individuals who can demonstrate that they are ambitious and keen to explore ways they can progress in the yachting sector, whether that is onboard or by transitioning ashore.
The programme welcomes all departments onboard and all sectors ashore, recognising that a circular knowledge economy and opening up the dialogue between shore and sea will create ripple effects elevating all areas.
The next generation of talent will be matched with key industry mentors who want to give back to an industry they love and who have the appropriate experience to support individuals with career progression and opportunities depending on their goals. Mentees will benefit from regular one-to-one sessions as well as community learning, peer-to-peer networking and exclusive industry discounts.
LEGASEA promises to:
This is the second year Quay Crew has supported LEGASEA, which mentored over 90 people during its pilot six-month programme between November 2020 and June 2021.
Alongside Burgess, we believe we have a responsibility to invest in the next generation. A successful future for the superyacht industry depends on collaboration and realising the collective intelligence from established industry professionals. They have the ability to establish cultures of inclusion and high performance that unites the industry towards a common goal, to see our industry at its best.
Founder of LEGASEA and She of the Sea, Jenny Matthews, commented: “The overall purpose of this platform is to remove the luck of the draw for career-focused yachting professionals, providing access to opportunities, knowledge and networking, and to create that circular knowledge economy that benefits all members, professionally and personally.
"We really value the collaborative aspects of partnership and only want to work with organisations that hold aligned principles and provide real value to our members professionally and personally."
Our Director, Tim Clarke, added: “What Jenny and her team have been doing to promote inclusion and equality across the yachting sector through She of the Sea is admirable, and now the LEGASEA mentorship programme offers something far more tangible to crew.”
“As a crew recruitment agency, we have first-hand experience of the shortage of high calibre candidates, but also the lack of opportunities with longer term prospects. It’s time we all start championing the industry as one where someone can enjoy a worthy and highly rewarding career, both at sea across all onboard departments, and on land.”
“We are thrilled to be able to give motivated crew the chance to gain access to this exclusive service at no cost and look forward to watching individuals grow and enjoy successful careers.”
Lucy Medd, Partner, Fleet Crew Manager at Burgess, said: ”We are delighted to be sponsoring this programme, and to be championing our hard working crew. We strongly believe that career progression whether onboard or ashore is a worthy cause to support. The talent we have within the Burgess fleet of yachts is of such a high standard and this programme helps our team to build on existing skills while also opening doors for when the time comes to move on.
“We look forward to receiving applicants for our scholarship programme, and working with crew to help them transition into their next role – whatever that role is.”
