superyacht and scandal

It goes without saying that the media love salacious stories about the superyacht industry and will always print anything which will get clicks from the general public.

Whether it’s a knock-on article from a particularly juicy Below Deck episode, negative coverage on the environmental impact of yachting, or your typical expose piece by a former crew member, mainstream press coverage, in particular, can threaten to unravel the reputation of some superyachts, owners and crew members.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine was one of the more recent international events that cast a spotlight on superyacht ownership.

There have also been increasing attacks by climate activists too over the damage yachts cause to the environment.

And just in the last few weeks there were reports of crew members being arrested on suspicion of arson because local authorities claim that fireworks set off from a superyacht caused a huge forest fire.

Protecting your reputation is therefore crucial. And in the worst-case scenarios, stories and accusations can have severe consequences.

This guest article by media lawyer, Daniel Taylor, on Our Faceless Crew, provides advice and top tips for avoiding a media storm and what owners, Captains and management companies should do when their reputation is threatened.

Certainly worth a read!
